Tomlin Says Deal Is “Unlikely”…

Former Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler was impressed by Gavin Tomlin during his loan spell.

In an interview with KentOnline former Gills loanee Gavin Tomlin has revealed that securing a deal to keep him at the club seems unlikely.

Tomlin scored six goals in ten appearances for The Gills last season whilst on loan from fellow League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge and his performances impressed The Gills fans and ex manager Andy Hessenthaler.

Despite the player himself enjoying his time at Priestfield he has said that it is unlikely he will become a Gills player over the summer.

”I don’t know, I am just enjoying my holidays. As it is, I am still a Dagenham player.”

The wide man gave The Gills some much needed width towards the end of the season but was forced to miss 14 games after troubles with a hamstring injury.

Any deal would probably be classed as unlikely regardless of the player, when a club is without a manager. But with Hessenthaler moving upstairs, Tomlin has a better chance than most and a deal may still be done if the new man is impressed.

Would you like The Gills to sign Gavin Tomlin permanently over the summer?

Wait For New Manager Goes On…

Supporters of Gillingham Football Club are going to have to remain patient for at least another seven days as they wait to see who will be the next man to try for promotion to League One.

Chairman, Paul Scally is thought to have conducted three interviews so far with a couple more due to be conducted this week. The Gills owner had said all along that he would expect to announce Hessenthaler’s successor at the beginning on June.

The same names remain in the frame with the likes of Mark Robson and Martin Allen as some of the hotly tipped favourites. Other names include Peter Taylor and Andy Scott.

As is the norm for when a managerial vacancy comes up new names are added to the list by various sources every week until a new man is appointed. There are also some websites now reporting that former Wolves manager, Mick McCarthy has been linked with position although that would surely be a improbable outcome.

It is set to be a busy June for The Gills as shortly after a decision on the new manager is expected to be reached, the fixture list will be announced on the 11th. After Crewe’s victory at Wembley yesterday The Gills know they are guaranteed another trip to Cheltenham this season.

Gills Hanging On To Six Youngsters…

Gillingham have confirmed that they will be taking up the option of an extra year at the club for the six young pro’s, keeping them at the club until 2013.

Goalkeeper Darren Hawkes (middle), and defenders Jack Evans (top), Joe Carter and Callum Davies (bottom), along with midfielders Alex Brown and Tom Brunt have all been handed one year deals.

Some have already made big impacts this season with Evans and Davies both putting in some impressive performances this season. Brown made his debut in the last game of the season against Morecambe and Hawkes has been named on the bench several times this season.

The others will now be looking to do the same and prove that the future is bright for The Gills. Brunt has gained valuable experience out on loan this season but Carter unfortunately missed almost the entire season after breaking his leg. He will hoping for better luck this time around as he looks to make a name for himself at The Gills.

Gills Release Further Three…

On Monday manager less Gillingham announced that three more players would be leaving the club this summer.

Simon King (right) and Gary Richards (below) join Matt Lawrence on the list of defenders leaving the club, whilst striker Jo Kuffour will also not be offered a new deal.

King and Richards have featured heavily for The Gills since joining from Barnet and Southend, forming a formidable partnership in the 2008/2009 campaign which saw The Gills promoted from league two. However, both have also had their fair share of injuries and have been let go as Gillingham look to the future.

Striker Jo Kuffour only signed for the club earlier this year after a prolific loan spell. However since signing on a permanent deal he managed just the two goals and the reasonably well travelled frontman will now be looking for a new club.

Hessenthaler Accepts Directors Role…

Club legend Andy Hessenthaler has accepted a position on the club’s board, days after being sacked as manager.

Hessenthaler, who had one year left of a three year deal stepped down from his post after failing twice to get The Gills out of League Two. However Chairman Paul Scally was keen to see him continue his stay at the club by joining the board as a director of football.

On Wednesday it was announced that Hessenthaler had accepted the offer and will now assume roles in “all footballing matters” including scouting and player recruitment. This could bode well for The Gills with the former manager already showing he can spot a player with the signings of Paolo Gazzaniga and also being able to tempt Chris Whelpdale (right) and Charlie Lee to the Priestfield Stadium on a permanent basis.

He also played a big part in the signing of Simon King after recommending him to, then manager, Ronnie Jepson after his time at Barnet.

Now that he has accepted the position, rather ironically, Hess will now have a say in who replaces him. A decision that is likely to be made by the end of the month.

Constantine Confirms Gills Interest…

Ex Millwall coach Steven Constantine has publicly admitted that he would like to become the next Gillingham manager.

Currently in charge of Nea Salamina FC of Cyprus, the ex international manager told Kent News that he would be interested in the job as he looks to manage in the English game for the first time.

“The way I look at it I’m only going to get one chance (of managing in England) and if that were to be at Gillingham, then that would be fine.”

The well travelled manager who has been in charge of India and Malawi, amongst others believes his worldwide travels would help him attract players to Priestfield despite a small budget.

“I can get players from Spain, Africa, Asia because they know that I know their culture and it’s easy for them to come. Working on a shoe-string budget is no problem.”

Constantine believes that nothing more than a couple of small changes will be enough to get The Gills back to League One and he also told Kent News that he would be happy to do that with Hessenthaler helping him from his position on the board.

“Gillingham have just missed out, there wouldn’t be too many things that would need changing, just fine tuning things.”

“I have heard positive things about him, (Hessenthaler) I hope he does stay, I think for somebody like me he would be an invaluable individual. He’s been at the club a long time, so obviously you don’t want to lose somebody like that.”

The club are said to still be awaiting a decision from Hessenthaler.

First Interviews Have Been Arranged…

Speaking on Saturday to the club’s official site, Chairman Paul Scally revealed that the process of finding a new manager was well underway, with some interviews already arranged.

The Gills owner had previously said that he hopes to have someone in place by the end of the month but after receiving an alleged amount of keen interest for the vacant managerial role, Mr. Scally will have a busy month ahead of him.

On Thursday he said that he had already received up to 40 applicants for the job and on Saturday revealed the trend has continued.

“I get numerous applications and numerous agents who call me with many names that they represent and I’m getting CV’s at a rate of 10 a day at the moment.”

Scally believes that the vast number of applicants is testament to the club adding that there have been some “very interesting” people in contact.

Later on in the interview he went on to confirm that the first step towards appointing Andy Hessenthaler’s successor were underway by stating that this week he will be conducting certain interviews throughout the country in the search for the man to guide The Gills out of League Two.
